I forgot to mention this in my post last night. If anyone is interested, the board meeting where they will possibly be deciding on the Gallery's fate will be held on Tuesday, May 25th, at 5pm in T1100.

Trying to get as many people out there as I can, hopefully get a chance to voice our concerns. Otherwise, letters are a great way to get our voices across.

Revision to Final Project

This is the revision to the Final Project:

Use the Saatchi Gallery website's artist dada files to curate your individual exhibitions, portfolios. Your project and presentation will be similar to your first projects with exception that the Final Project will be a Group Exhibition. You can work with the theme "They Died Laughing," or your own choice of title and theme. Either get your inspiration for your exhibiton/portfolio from browsing the different artists on the Saatchi site or begin with your idea and then proceed to browse and find artists that will fit your exhibition idea. Then create your exhibition/portfolio. The project should contain all aspects of the exhibition, Title, Statement, artist statements for the artists in your exhibition, Announcement Card, Press Release, Checklist along with the images of the works chosen for the exhibition.

Remember, this is a virtual exhibition, but you will be organizing a hard copy and also a cd for presentation on the 18th and 20th (9-12PM), or earlier during class time.

Final Statement for TDL

Life is absurd and full of irony. If the world is a dark and twisted place, a sense of humor is essential for survival. With the terror around us the easiest thing to do is laugh your head off. If you’re going to die, you may as well die laughing. The works in “They Died Laughing” confront the human condition not with pathos but with levity.

TDL. I like that! Haha!

Humor is not just a tool of the juvenile or the idiot. Humor can present ideas that slide into awareness, revealing a depth unexpected. The works in "They Died Laughing' may be humorous but a subtle sense of irony or sarcasm belies the social agenda.

Our death is inevitable, and if we should  die laughing, which happens so rarely, we might as well die laughing. But then again wishing is always nice and magic works everytime. Wake up, in this reality and nobody dies laughing. All we could do is just pretend.

When I think of the Enron scandal, the tycoons on wall street, the banks, the oil industry and all of the corruption in government...those who lead our country only to pocket our hard earned money...what I think about is that they must have all died laughing...because we blindly follow and allow them to take from us and deceive us with our own greed.
It might be an interesting topic to consider these misuses, but may be a bit too political for us. Also a bit hard to find artists that focus on the political aspects.

Here is what I was thinking...

Thoughts on the theme + Ex Card

I know we didn't really talk much about the theme and the meaning of it, but an idea I had was to take an ironic look at it. Such as, people who seemed happy even though they were dying. A piece in the faculty show, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, seems to me to fit this. The old man is homeless -- a social death, perhaps -- but he is shown as smiling.

Another play on the theme would be the meaning of death. There is psychological and emotional death, as well as physical. Perhaps even alternative meanings of "laugh"? Just some thoughts.
